Although the shotgun is considerably useful in the crucible, in story missions the shots are erratic and without a perfectly placed head shot from about 5 feet away, it is not very useful. Yes, you may feel with a semi-automatic scout rifle or hand cannon a shotgun would be useful with up-close encounters. The sniper rifle is a must have for ANY class. It has good stopping power and its range helps to avoid being surrounded unnecessarily. The scout rifle is a reliable critical hit machine great for soloing and taking down enemies faster. It can be extremely useful for getting three quick critical hits, however with the amount of dodging and side stepping you are likely to be doing while soloing, the pulse rifle is not as efficient. The issue with the pulse rifle is that it seems to miss its mark repeatedly, whether targets are moving or not. Where the automatic has obvious issues with stability, it makes for more difficult to hit head-shots. Other primaries can work as well however there are some setbacks. Of course this is capable with any weapon, however, the hand cannon and scout are most likely because they have the higher impacts. The range and impact of the scout rifle really make it useful for out-ranging stronger enemies, and causing what look like enemy "stumbles", which appear to be an interruption where the enemy takes a second to recover after a critical hit. You may interchange your primary with whatever suits you best, but clip-for-clip the scout rifle still appears to be the best at taking down strong enemies and bosses. One combination that is particularly great is the scout rifle, sniper, and rocket launcher. Do not feel limited, playing to your strengths as a player goes much further when soloing.
